First-ever Viper homecoming dance set for Oct. 19

Homecoming proposal by Tucker George to Laura Parrish .

For the first time in Vandegrift’s history, the school will have a homecoming dance hosted by the Legacies dance team.

“Kids and parents have asked for a Vandegrift Homecoming Dance since the school opened 11 years ago, but there were obstacles that discouraged support,” said Jill Wingrove, homecoming dance chair and mom of twin senior girls.

One of the biggest issues in recent years was that the homecoming football game date tended to fall on the same weekend as the popular Austin City Limits Music Festival, which so many students attend.

“Thanks to the Legacies’ Director, Holly Lyons, Principal Charlie Little and Coach Drew Sanders, the homecoming game date was pushed out this year so the students can devote more energy to the school’s homecoming festivities,” Wingrove said.

This year’s homecoming week theme is “Cloud Nine” and it will be celebrated throughout the week with theme days, the parade, pep rally, game and halftime show.

The homecoming football game will be Friday, Oct. 18 when the Vipers play Round Rock’s Westwood Warriors

Then on Saturday, Oct. 19 will be the semi-formal homecoming dance for students from 9th-12th grades in the VHS cafeteria from 7:30 p.m. – 11 p.m.

A nominated HOCO Dance Committee voted for the theme, and plans are in motion for converting the school’s cafeteria areas into a majestic and elegant space.

Students will be able to submit songs for the DJ to play and the DJ will honor the 2019 VHS Homecoming Court and the MVP from the previous night’s football game.

“We are also hoping to be able to have the students vote that Friday at school for the winner of ‘Best Mum’ which will be announced at the dance,” Wingrove said.

Desserts and beverages will be available in a Cloud Dine setting.

Tickets are $15 in advance at www.vhs.leanderisd.org or are $20 at the door.

Parent volunteers and chaperones will be in attendance to monitor the festivities, including many assistant principals and teachers. Once a student leaves the dance, they will not be allowed to re-enter.

“We really want this to be a special and memorable event that will become a long-term tradition for the school,” Wingrove said.

The 2019 Vandegrift Homecoming committee is working on the details of Vandegrift’s fi rst Homecoming Dance to be held Saturday, Oct. 19 in the VHS cafeteria from 7:30 – 11 p.m. Members of the Viper HoCo committee include: L to R- Laura Parrish, Cassidy Stevenson, Kate Kemmerer, Zack Gillcrist, Hannah Nauert, Taylor Childs, Katie Zaza and
