Let it snow, let it snow, let is snow: Rare in ATX

The rare snow accumulation on Jan. 10 brought sledding, snowball fights, snowflake catching, snow angel making and snowman building to Four Points.

Sunday’s unusual amount of snow — ranging from 1.5 inches to 6 inches around Austin — came from an upper level disturbance from the Pacific Northwest.

According to the National Weather Service, the average snowfall in January in Austin is nearly a half inch. Austin reported record accumulation on Nov. 22-23 in 1937 when 11 inches were received. The last time Austin received more than an inch of snow was on Dec. 7-8, 2017, when 1.3 inches fell at Austin Bergstrom International Airport, the weather service said.

Austin last received snow when a trace of it fell on Feb. 5, 2020.
