The Vandegrift High School Legacies kicked off 2026 with a milestone performance at London’s New Year’s Day Parade, joining an international lineup that draws spectators from across the globe.

“It’s such a prestigious event, and to know our Legacies were recognized on an international level was incredibly validating,” said Holly Lyons, director of the Vandegrift Legacies Dance Team. “Personally, it’s a dream come true to see our dancers represent not just Vandegrift High School, but our entire community on a global stage.”

Upon accepting the formal invitation, the team was honored with a commemorative plate marking the occasion. For many dancers, the trip offered a first-ever journey to Europe and a chance to immerse themselves in London’s history and culture.

Beyond the parade performance, the itinerary featured stops at famous landmarks including the Tower of London, Palace of Westminster, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben, and the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. The team also explored Notting Hill, the London Eye, and Covent Garden.

Trip preparations were underway for nearly a year, including a full-scale fundraising campaign. Dancers and their families rallied support through sponsorships, camps, merchandise sales, and social media outreach. The team is grateful for the community’s support, which made it possible for these young artists to travel and represent VHS and Austin with pride and confidence.

“This trip symbolizes the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and excellence. It’s a celebration of who we are and what we stand for—passion, persistence, and pride,” Lyons adds. Through their performance, the Legacies aimed to promote joy, inspiration, and a sense of connection across cultures. Sharing Texas spirit along one of the world’s most iconic parade routes was an experience they will never forget.
