Q&A with Drew Sanders

Head Football Coach/Athletic Coordinator at Vandegrift High School

1. What was the biggest factor in the Vipers’ success last season, and how can you maintain that momentum going into this season?
The biggest factor was our culture—our kids truly bought into the “Expect to Win” mindset. They believed in the process, prepared relentlessly, and played for each other. It was fascinating to see them continue to improve as the year went on. We’ll maintain that momentum by keeping the focus on daily habits and effort. It’s about the process. Championships are built in the offseason and in the little details, so we won’t change our formula—just continue to raise the standard.

2. Did you learn lessons as a coach during last year’s championship run that you’ll apply to this season?
Absolutely. One lesson was to never underestimate the importance of staying steady. The bigger the stage got, the more our kids looked to  each other and the coaches for calm leadership. I learned how powerful consistency can be. We’ll carry that into this year—staying grounded, controlling what we can control, and not letting the noise of “defending champs” distract us.

3. What are the team’s strengths and concerns this season?
Our offense will be our strength at the beginning of the season.  With our determination and desire, we hope to see the inexperienced defense continue to improve and get to the Vandegrift standard of defense.  We’ve also got a senior group that’s been through deep playoff runs and knows how to compete at the highest level. A concern is always replacing key playmakers, but that’s what we do.

4. What adjustments do you anticipate making to your game plan or coaching strategies to address the challenges of playing as a defending champion?
The biggest adjustment isn’t in X’s and O’s—it’s in mindset. Everyone will give us their best shot now more than ever. We’ll emphasize that we aren’t defending anything—we’re chasing something new. The goal is to keep that edge, stay hungry, and remind our guys that last year’s trophies don’t win this year’s games. We’re 0-0 and will have to earn everything. I have zero doubt our guys will be ready.

5. How do the Vipers stack up in district?
District 25-6A is as competitive as it gets, week in and week out.McNeil, Round Rock, Vista Ridge, Cedar Ridge, Hutto, really every program has talent and strong coaching. Several schools have new coaches, so that will be interesting. That being said, we’ve won seven straight district titles, and we expect to be in that conversation again. But nothing is given; every game is earned.

6. Any up-and-coming stars the community should know about?
We’ve got several young guys ready to step into bigger roles. Without naming everyone, I’d say keep an eye on some of our underclassmen who are stepping into the offensive skill spots—we’ve got speed and toughness developing there. On defense, we’ve got a few juniors and new seniors who are going to be difference-makers. The fun part of this job is watching new names become household names for Viper Nation.

7. What specific goals do you have for the program this season, both on and off the field, and how do you measure success beyond just wins and losses?
On the field, our goal is the same every year: win district, make a playoff run, and put ourselves in position to compete for a state championship. Off the field, it’s about continuing to grow young men of character. Success isn’t just about wins—it’s about discipline, effort, toughness, and honor and learning lessons that will carry these kids far beyond football. If we can graduate players who are better sons, brothers, and future husbands and fathers, then we’ve done our job.
