Vandegrift’s ascension to Class 6A has been the subject of numerous stories across Central Texas already this year. That three of Leander ISD’s schools have grown enough in enrollment to force a move to the state’s top classification is one thing. The bigger story is that the resulting UIL competition district — District 25-6A — will be comprised of four teams that reached the state quarterfinals last season, three state semifinalists, and two teams that appeared in 6A title games last December.

Vandegrift High School has earned its third gold medal distinction in three years from U.S. News and World Report and numbers 54th among 466 ranked Texas high schools.

“It’s an honor and source of pride to be awarded a Gold Medal,” said Charlie Little, VHS principal.

“Our programs at VHS continue to grow and thrive because we have amazing students, supportive parents, passionate teachers and the Hill Country Education Foundation and Leander Educational Excellence Foundation that provide resources to support our innovation,” Little said. Continue reading →

Impending thunderstorms caused school officials to change the plans for Vandegrift’s annual spring football game and Viper Bites, canceling the food festival portion of the event and moving the football game up by an hour on Thursday.

The Legacies dance team, the VHS cheer squad and many fans were at the spring game as well.

The Lower Colorado River Authority opened three floodgates at Mansfield Dam on Memorial Day evening and warns the community about strong and swift flows.

“Flows in the Highland Lakes and lower Colorado River will be strong and swift, and anyone on or near the water should exercise extreme caution and should take precautions to protect people and property,” said Clara Tuma, LCRA spokesperson.

Floodgate operations along the Highland Lakes are increasing in response to rain that fell north of the Highland Lakes over the weekend.

“We expect the three floodgates to remain open for at least a couple of days. The exact timing depends on rainfall, inflows, etc.,” Tuma said.
