Voters on Tuesday morning go to Randalls Steiner Ranch to cast their ballot at the only Four Points early voting site.

Randalls Steiner Ranch has had a steady volume of early voting since the polling place opened at 7 a.m. on Oct. 24. By the end of the first day of early voting, 1,171 voters had cast their ballots at Randalls which contributed to the 32,732 total people who voted in Travis County on Monday.

That’s nearly double the first day of early voting in 2012, and close to the 33,354 who voted on the first day of 2008, when President Barack Obama was first elected, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

Texas typically has low voter turnout

Early voting started this week and runs through Nov. 4, and the hope by election officials is to increase voter turnout in Four Points and across Texas.

In the March primaries earlier this year, voter turnout in Texas rose to 2.8 million on the Republican side and 1.4 million on the Democratic side — the largest primary showing since 2008.

However, Texas is still a low turnout state. When the numbers are put another way, 14.3 percent of Texas adults voted in the Republican primary and 7.3 percent voted in the Democratic primary. Flip that: Nearly four of every five adults in Texas didn’t cast a ballot.

Vandegrift hosted its annual Pink Out event to raise money and awareness for breast cancer on Oct. 14. The game, against rival Vista Ridge, was themed “Two Schools, One Cause” in honor of those affected by breast cancer.

Steiner Ranch resident Andy Giles lost his wife, Laurie, to an aggressive form of breast cancer on May 14, 2011. Their children, Meagan, now 24, and Mark, now 19, were active in the community at the time of the loss of their mother.

Giles, a longtime resident, explains that before Vandegrift was completed in 2009 and VHS students were still attending classes at Four Points Middle School, football trainer Stephanie Cunningham started the tradition of passing a football helmet at a designated game to raise money for breast cancer research.

Place 5 candidates discuss plans, district challenges in Q&A

Residents will elect representatives for the Leander ISD Board of Trustees Places 3, 4 and 5 on Nov. 8. The three spots are being challenged.

The Hill Country News asked the following questions to each school board candidate and this week, the Place 5 candidates — incumbent Russell Bundy and challenger James “Jim” MacKay — are featured.

Last week in the Oct. 12 edition, the Place 4 responses between incumbent Grace Barber-Jordan and challenger Scott Rowe were shared. On Oct. 5, the Place 3 candidates — incumbent Pam Waggoner and Chris Remy — answered these same questions. Each response is in the candidate’s own words.

1. Explain how your background and experience make you a good candidate for school board.

With 30 plus years in law enforcement and 9 years as a Leander ISD Trustee I have the experience and leadership needed to continue with the work already in motion on Leander ISDs vision. A vision to move forward with managing a fast growth district and balancing our financial needs with our new superintendent and current board trustees.

2. Do you/did you have students in the district? How many, ages and schools they attend(ed).

I have one child that attended k-12 and graduated from Vista Ridge HS and now attends college at Texas State University.

3. What are the three biggest challenges facing the district today and in the near future? How would you like to see those challenges addressed?
