How did the Vandegrift Viper band trailer get stuck on the train tracks prior to the freight train crash?

The photo shows the Vandegrift band instrument trailer stuck on railroad tracks in San Antonio seconds before impact of
a moving Union Pacifi c freight train. No one was injured. “The truck sank down into a patch of fresh asphalt that was not
marked by the city,” said Jarrett Lipman, VHS director of bands. “Unfortunately, VHS’s trailer, ‘Black Pearl,’ got stuck.”
Vandegrift band director Jarrett Lipman said the San Antonio fire and police departments were vital in helping Viper band parents, former VHS director Jeremy Spicer and himself unload instruments from the wreckage following the crash.                              Photo by Jarrett Lipman
