LISD has 14% increase in AP scholars, Vandegrift HS has most in the district with 201 scholars

Leander-ISD1Leander ISD Superintendent Bret Champion announced that 638 students earned 684 Advanced Placement Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the 2014 AP Exams. This is a 14 percent increase from the previous year when 561 students earned 597 distinctions.

“On behalf of LISD, I offer our congratulations to these students for participating in the rigorous AP Program, for fully applying themselves to the demands of the coursework and for excelling on the challenging exams. We are tremendously proud of our AP Scholars,” said Champion.

LISD also reported that 3,280 high school students took 5,537 AP exams in 2014, up from the 2,360 students who took 4,364 tests in 2013. In 2013-14, AP Human Geography was added at the ninth-grade level, which contributed to the district’s 39 percent increase in students testing.

“College-readiness courses, including the AP Program, prepare students for higher education and beyond. In order to do well, students must refine their study and time-management habits and really understand the course material,” said Champion. “We are pleased that in 2014, while LISD had a 30 percent increase in the number of AP Exams given from 2013, we maintained the percentage of exams that scored a 3, 4, or 5,” said Champion.

Vandegrift High School had 201 AP Scholars:

  • 16 National AP Scholar Award,
  • 67 AP Scholar with Distinction Award,
  • 47 AP Scholar with Honor Award,
  • 87 AP Scholar Award.

Cedar Park High School had 171 AP Scholars:

  • 17 National AP Scholar Award,
  • 71 AP Scholar with Distinction Award,
  • 32 AP Scholar with Honor Award,
  • 68 AP Scholar Award.

 

Vista Ridge High School had 150 scholars:

  • 12 National AP Scholar Award,
  • 42 AP Scholar with Distinction Award,
  • 29 AP Scholar with Honor Award,
  • 79 AP Scholar Award.

Leander High School had 65 AP Scholars:

  • 8 AP Scholar with Distinction Award,
  • 12 AP Scholar with Honor Award,
  • 45 AP Scholar Award.

Rouse High School had 51 AP Scholars:

  • 1 National AP Scholar Award,
  • 8 AP Scholar with Distinction Award,
  • 15 AP Scholar with Honor Award,
  • 28 AP Scholar Award.

The National AP Scholar Award is presented to students who earn an average score of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP Exams taken, andscores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. The AP Scholar with Distinction Award is presented to students who earn an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. The AP Scholar with Honor Award is achieved by students who earn an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken,and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams and the AP Scholar Award is given to students who complete three or more AP Exams with scores of 3 or higher.

“In our continuing efforts to ensure that students graduate from our district prepared to succeed in college, we are pleased that a growing number of students are participating in the AP Program because it is one way we bring college-level academics into our high schools. The AP Program is an incredibly valuable opportunity for our students, as it fosters knowledge and skills and can potentially earn them credit for college,” said Champion.
