The Vandegrift cheer program attended four days of National Cheerleading Association (NCA) camp July 31st – August 3 at the Moody Gardens Convention Center in Galveston.
This camp provides rigorous training in the areas of skills training, coaches education and safety in preparation for football season. The session is attended by many other high school cheer teams from all over the state.
On the final day of camp, the squads compete against other attending schools for a variety of awards.
This year the varsity squad earned the most coveted Spirit Stick Award, Spirit Megaphone Award, Stunt Safe Award and a bid to NCA. The junior varsity squad earned the Spirit Stick Award, Stunt Safe Award and a bid to NCA. Brianna Roughton, Vandegrift head cheer coach, earned the Positively Prepared Award.
Additionally, the following girls were honored with the NCA All American Cheerleader Award: Varsity – Kenzie Kudrick, Lyla Louden, Sienna Ceder, Brooke Tjelmeland, Caitlyn Tejada, Britney McCarley, Maria Kundrouff, Lynleigh Shulte, Ellie Bergquist, Charley Vollmer, Bailey McCarley, Anna Jacobs, Kambrie Schulte; JV – Madison Shook, Roxy Jacops, Karis Angie, Avery Frollo.
Most of the Vandegrift cheerleaders have many years in the sport of cheerleading before entering high school therefore making the squad’s overall skill set advanced in the areas of tumbling, stunting and choreography. This squad has many cheerleaders that are on All Star Cheer teams and are enrolled in outside tumbling classes which all benefit being a member of the Vandegrift cheer squad.
