Viper homecoming brings community together

Pranav Batra and MaryEllen Hartman were named the 2018 Vandegrift Homecoming King & Queen.

Vandegrift celebrated homecoming last week with a community parade, pep rally and the crowning of the homecoming king and queen during halftime of the football game against McNeil.

On Wednesday, there was lots of school spirit on display during the parade when more than 23 floats weaved through the campus. Vipers in various teams and organizations threw candy and beads to spectators along the parade route. Other parade participants walked in groups like cheer, band and Legacies.

The VHS Parent-Teacher-Student Association hosted the parade and invited three judges from the community — Gene Arant from Gene Arant Keller Williams Realty, Jimmy Allgood from Allgood Chiropractic and Lynette Haaland from Four Points News — to help select the winning floats.

The first place prize went to girls basketball, theatre and drama club received second place, and lacrosse third. Each group was awarded prize money from PTSA. Girls soccer was named honorable mention, the best spirit award went to 7th grade Four Points Pop Warner football, and best style to Mighty Mite cheer.

On Friday night, while the VHS volleyball team was wrapping up a three-set win against McNeil, neighboring Ed W. Monroe Stadium was filling up. The Viper band and choir performed, and at halftime, Pranav Batra and MaryEllen Hartman were named the 2018 Vandegrift Homecoming King & Queen. The Vipers won the football game too.
