Vandegrift Vipers Anisha Apte and Gabby Cusano won the 6A girls doubles state tennis tournament on May 16- 17 in College Station

The Vandegrift squad of Anisha Apte and Gabby Cusano won the 6A girls doubles state tennis tournament on May 16-17 in College Station.

This is the first 6A Tennis State Champion title in Vandegrift History. Gabby did win a 5A Doubles State title her freshman year.

“For our 3rd year in 6A, our Vipers have made a name for ourselves. I’m proud of what these kids have accomplished,” said Daniel White, VHS tennis head coach.

The girls were able to go the entire season with only one loss. That loss was in the regional finals against the team they ultimately beat in the state finals. The Vipers were ready.

“We showed up to the state tournament and played our best tennis all year. We were able to go the whole state tournament without dropping a set,” White said. Their score was 6-2, 6-3 in the finals.

Vandegrift’s boys doubles team of Blaine Kanak and Nic Cusano won 3rd place at state.

“The boys ultimately fell to the now state champions,” White said. “We were able to push them to three sets, but they proved to be ready for the challenge.” The boys’ champions won their final match in two sets.

“It was a great season for these 2 boys, and I wish them well as they head to college,” he added.
